A minimum six month course is required to qualify for a work permit so therefore most people only want a six month course. There are advantages and disadvantages to a six month course as far as visas are concerned. It is legal to study for up to six months on a tourist visa so many prospective students do not have to apply for a visa at all. They can just come to Canada on a tourist visa and take the training program. The Canadian Embassy in some countries does issue visas for six month courses and they do have the option and the right to do so. In many countries, student visa applications to study to be a live-in caregiver are denied and the reason cited is that the applicant has not proven to the embassy official's satisfaction that they fully intend to return home at the end of the study period. I don't know that changing the length of the training program would change that situation.
